Press announcements descibing this as the start of the system are a bit wrong, it is in fact a test bed for a number of space borne system components, atomic clocks, signal generation etc,and is also reserving the frequencies allocated to Galileo by WARC 2003. I have been unable to find out whether it will radiate the E6 Channel (1260-1300 MHz). A second test satellite will be launched in the spring. As far as I am aware ( please correct me anyone) there is still no signed contract for the system development, full scale deployment and commercial operation of the system. It was scheduled for signature in Feb 2005. The designers and builders of the satellite vehicle (not its payload) launched today are Surrey Satellite Technology, a spin off company from the University of Surrey. SSTL started as the group who built the UOSAT mini satellites and their CEO is Professor Sir Martin Sweeting G3YJO, well known to the AMSAT community. It is a great achievement for a small, dedicated and highly professional company to have their biggest satellite to date sucessfully launched on schedule. Information and photos can be found at SSTL's website www.sstl.co.uk Please do not email me complaining about the existence of, or need for,Galileo, or whether it will be better or worse than GPS etc . Better that you should contact (and support) your local national radio society who will be working through IARU to endeavour to achieve coexistence between our interests and those of Galileo. About a year ago I wrote a paper on this topic which is still reasonably current and can be found at http://www.southgatearc.org/articles/galileo.htm Happy New Year to all, Peter G3LTF [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] ------------------------ Yahoo!
