Subject: [Moon-net] OA4O QRV 432 EME!!!

Dear friends

OA4O (FH17FV) :

8m dish, full az and el and horizontal polarization only (min. el 20° due to QRM, they are in the middle of the city of Lima!) 100 W (maybe 300-400W starting Sunday)

good preamp

Saturday was a fantastic day, we copied a lot of stations calling OA4O. We followed the skeds like we arranged yesterday, here our log:

10:35 UTC DL9KR,        problems with the sequence, INCOMPLETE QSO

11:12 UTC YO4FRJ,      he used 2.5min sequence, a lot of confusion at OA4O, INCOMPLETE QSO

11:35 UTC SM2CEW,    EXCELLENT QSO, in 10min, strong signal, speaker copy without filters. VALID QSO

12:25 UTC DL9KR,        second sked, EXCELLENT COPY, VALID QSO

13:10 UTC K2UYH,       EASY, strong signal, speaker copy no filters, VALID QSO

13:25 UTC F2TU,          signal only in spectran, few letters, INCOMPLETE QSO

13:35 UTC KE2N,          we can’t follow the QSO, to much confusion with OOO, RO, INCOMPLETE QSO

14:30: UTC KL6M,         we copy only in spectran for few minutes the nothing, NO QSO

Any way, this was a hard day, we jumped into the cold water and some times we experienced errors in the sequence, we apologies for that, WE ARE ROOKIES.

Here some important comments/information:

-          Drift problem still not solved, no JT65C for the moment, our radios are too OLD

-          OA Saturday night: CW Operator’s Jorge OA4BJU, Nando OA4EI. Antenna controller Pablo OA4DJW, Augusto OA4CVT, assistance in the operation and log Alex OA4CRK

-          Some station report in the logger problems with Faraday rotation. Very important to know OA4O has only horizontal polarization, we are working to have H and V like HB9Q, prototype not finished yet.

-          Too many transmissions out of protocol, some people behave like HF CW operators and try to start a conversation, this confused the operators at OA4O. Please keep to the standard and most simple procedure!

-          What about the sequence? DL9KR tried 2.5 minutes sequence and this made strong chaos at OA4O, we know only 1min sequence.

-          Our operators have experience in HF but not in EME, we can’t decode if the speed is to fast, 16 wpm maximum.

-          The antenna controller build by Hannes is not yet installed, WE POINT THE ANTENNA TAKING SOME REFERENCES HERE AND WATCHING THE SIGNAL, WORK’S GOOD!

My final comment about “OA4O back to EME”:

For 16 years I had a dream and it became reality! Every body is happy! One important comment regarding JT65C and CW, some OA ham did participate only to look. Now a group of OA ham is starting to build CW oscillators to learn CW because they want to operate OA4O on EME. Other ones, more computer-oriented, want to jump into JT65C. And now EVERYBODY is well organized in a group, the OA4O EME group without any consideration about the mode. But the most important thing I learned during this trip to Peru: It is not important if you use JT65, CW or Laser if is possible, the most important lesson is: 3 month ago the OA4O antenna was totally stopped and EME was not a topic for the club, now a group of young OA hams want to explore this fascinating area of our hobby and they don’t care if it is CW or JT65, THEY WANT TO DO EME, THATS ALL! I’m happy because my dream now became reality, WE ARE ON THE MOON!

HB9Q coordinates all skeds for the time being, e-mail to dan@hb9q.ch . We will start random activity once we feel experienced enough to handle pile-ups, HI!

Subject: [Moon-net] OA4O results and next steps

Dear friends

Well, I don’t have words to explain how happy we are at OA4O! On Sunday we completed 6 QSOs, some of them in a record time for us. Here our log:

Sunday 3rd 2005: OA4O in FH17fv

11:45 UTC OE9ERC, RX both calls but never got RO RO RO, INCOMPLETE QSO

12:14 UTC OZ4MM, COMPLETE QSO

12:30 UTC YO4FRJ, cell phone repeater QRM, NO QSO

13:00 UTC F2TU, never copied, NO QSO

13:49 UTC DL7APV, some confusion, finally COMPLETE QSO

14:00 UTC G3LTF, never copied, NO QSO

14:21 UTC OE9ERC, we did this QSO in 7min, COMPLETE QSO

15:00 UTC KE2N, too weak, some times only visible on spectran, NO QSO

15:43 UTC N9AB, operator Pablo OA4DJW, this was his first EME contact in CW, COMPLETE QSO

16:11 UTC KL6M, very good operator, COMPLETE QSO

16:44 UTC K5JL, a lot of fading, hard but at the end COMPLETE QSO

The summary for Sunday shows 6 complete QSOs! I want to emphasize the participation of Pablo OA4DJW. Pablo is a novice CW operator with ONLY 4 QSOs in HF. Nando, OA4EI finished with us at 15:00 UTC and Pablo decided to try to operate. He was really under stress and nervous, but N9AB transmitted really good for him. He had some problems with the numbers but at the end he was capable to manage a complete EME CW QSO without any assistance (no logger, no second op). After that he worked another 2 stations. KL6M was so happy because OA4O was his first SA. We are very proud of Pablo. Congratulations Pablo!!!!!!!

The total summery for the 3 days has complete CW-QSOs with the following stations:

HB9Q (CW and JT65C), SM2CEW, DL9KR, K2UYH, OZ4MM, DL7APV, OE9ERC, N9AB, KL6M and K5JL for a total of 10 initials and 11 QSO’s with 7 DXCC!

Our Sunday operation was the last EME-activity for July at OA4O.

A lot of pending issues are on our to-do-list. Some of our equipment was really provisional and we need to finalize it in the next weeks. OA4O plans to accept skeds one weekend per month (usually activity weekend). We can’t be QRV daily and we ask the EME community to be patient. We will inform about our next activity on the moon-net, please stay tuned!

For the time being HB9Q (dan@hb9q.ch) coordinates the skeds. Please do only contact him for questions, comments and sked-requests.

I need to correct one of my comments of yesterday about our Saturday activity:

“What about the sequence? DL9KR tried 2.5 minutes sequence and this made strong chaos at OA4O, we know only 1min sequence.”

I apologize, dear Jan, I took the wrong call-sign in my above comment. It was YO4FRJ trying to use 2.5 minutes and not DL9KR.

This week my vacation in Peru finishes, I will be back in HB9 on Thursday.

TNX to all helping and participating this last weekend to make it possible to have Peru, OA4O on the MOON (432 MHz).

73 es happy DXing!
