OK1TEH

After one of the best tropo openings in last few years in December 2007. I didn't expect that something like this would happen so fast. However, it surprisingly happened. The most interesting thing is the date, because tropo condx came exactly 34 years after another big tropo opening when the similar tropospheric situation caused perfect conditions from EA3 to SM5 and from OK into F/G. So let's go 34 years back.

About tropo conditions on 20th January 1973 Pavel, OK1AIY wrote:

Weather monitoring by naked eye isn't so reliable - more in example from 20. 1. 1974.

How the situation appeared to us:
- even though January belongs to months with higher occurrence of thermal inversion, nobody expected it so late,
- in our area the barometric pressure was very low,
- Prague's Recent Aerological Data showed just a tiny inversion, no more then 1 °C,
- There had been bad weather with strong northwest wind and raining for several days in OK1 area,
- no long-distance station could be heard in BC VHF band.

Nevertheless it turned out to be one of the best tropo opening in last ten years. In such a weather it was possible to work with the most distant DX stations thank to atmospheric duct. During next day the weather got better, high-pressure area moved from France into middle Europe, conditions on shorter path below 800km had improved. However long-distance conditions ended. So as you can see you can't count on such condition indicators. It is necessary to monitor patiently and systematically 144 and 432 MHz bands. We have more options now - VHF beacons and repeaters make it in our area much easier and equipments are getting better, too. Good forecast isn't problem anymore, either. So don't waste those a few opportunities which mother nature offers us.

The situation 34 years later looked almost the same. On the output temperature graph from Libuse in Prague we didn't see anything like an inversion, barometric pressure was low and cold front (situated above north Germany and Poland) was crossing our area. This front brought some sporadic periods of raining and strong wind gusts. So any tropo opening wasn't expected.

On Sunday morning our traditional Activity contest started so the activity was high, but due to bad propagation it was difficult to work even OK2 stations. Stations like OK1KKL reported weather at 700m ASL as a very poor. So a lot of stations gave it up before the end of the contest. Even in Prague I wasn't able to make the usual 3cm contact with OK2KJT.

However, one day before nice tropo condx appeared above south France where many of nice long range contacts from EA and F to G, F, HB and southern Germany were made. The source was a nice high pressure with center above Spain. However, the first tropo opening was somewhere to JN38 area at the DL/F border almost 500km from OK1. On Sunday there was a contest similar to OK activity in France so the activity was higher. The most important thing was, that some EA stations moved to Pyrenees. For instace EA2TO/1 in IN83FE from his car at altitude about 1500m ASL with power of 200W.

The first exiciting thing was the information from DX Cluster about contact between EA2TO/1 and DK1FG in JN59OP. However Gerd is at about 900m ASL and he has a big antenna farm like OL4A gang. So if tropo reached about 300km west from Prague he didn't have any problem to make a contact to Atlantic coast. If you often visit the DX-cluster you can see him spotted by stations like F6FHP IN94, F0EJW IN78 almost every month. Despite of little chance I sent SMS alert message to Vasek, OK1FD. Vasek is QRV at about 700m ASL just a few kms from the OK/DL border. He is probably the most western OK station often active on VHF/UHF bands.

Tropo situation copied from the Hepburn's web is here (you can see that the tropo edge is somewhere in JN38/JN48 area and DK1FG is placed about 100km further to the East):

But let's write again about OK1FD. While the OK Activity contest is running normally, EA2TO/1 is calling CQ on 144.270 and Vasek is going to look for him after my SMS. Then I saw on ON4KST chat this message (Vasek just log-in).

2008-01-20 10:14:25Z OK1FD Vasek OK1TEH he is booming here on 144270..

MP3 from OK1FD:
http://ok1teh.nagano.cz/mp3/ea2to_ok1fd_200108.mp3

It's the first time ever when somebody worked tropo from OK to EA. Vasek OK1FD was very close to make it by the end of
December 2006, when he heard EA1 station in contact with DL6NAA, however they QSY'd to 70cm and the later sked didn't succeed. Maybe you would ask me, what's so extraordinary on OK-EA tropo contact when there were contacts from OK even on longer distances like to OY, OH or UA. It's over 2000 km from OK2 to OY. That may be true, but try to imagine, that from OK to OH or OY the signal path is mostly above the sea and signal has to cross over just some 200-300km above the mainland. Although such long range tropo conditions are rare, they occur from time to time. But the tropo opening to EA is something absolutely different! More compared to flat Poland and northern German (even if you don't have the QTH like me near Sumava mountains) the signal from OK to EA - IN83 must cross German Schwarzwald with top of hills about 1400m ASL followed by Vosges in France (btw. we made expedition to Vosges mountains during UHF contest 2007 like a F/OK4W/P) with the highest hills over 1400m ASL, too. But Vosges it's only less then half of the way of 1600km long path! In the West part of HB is Schweitzer Jura mountains with hills over 1700m ASL. Then after about 200km of relatively flat terrain there is overhanging Massif Central, French mountains with the highest hills almost 1900m. Then the path continues over flat land to the border of EA/F with over 3000m high Pyrenees. You'll get a better impression when you look at the signal path between OK and EA from orbit:

As you can see, the tropo signal path is really "optimal" :). The mountainous signal path seem to be also the reason of frequent Es opening between OK and EA1, because during the summer there is an area of heavy thunderstorms. This can often cause creation of E-sporadic layer on 2m. For these reasons we thought that a tropo opening from OK into EA is kind of Utopia especially due to Alps in the signal path. In our radio club OK2KKW we had a saying from old OK1KRA times by the less successful contests that OP should be more patient because "A queue is forming in Pyrenees for him" :-).

So it's logical that such a contact was done by OK1FD from his almost the best QTH for EA tropo in OK, but would it be possible from Prague? I was monitoring 144.270 expecting nothing special and I heard nothing of course. During last hour of the Activity contest I gave it up and started looking for another DX. In Prague wind was blowing peeking to 80km/h. On the chat I found F6FHP QRV IN94. He is often active on EME so he had QRO. We arranged periods for CW and frequency. We made it in the end, but the tropo signal was very weak supported by several strong MS reflections. You can see the F6FHP's signal on the picture from Spectran. QRB was 1268km.

After the QSO with Joel, F6FHP I restarted thinking about the Spanish DX so I returned to 144.270 and with big help of friends from KST chat I sent QSP to EA2TO and asked him for CW QSO. With help of French hams I got to know that he would start calling CW CQ after the end of Activity contest at 11UTC. So I started listening on 144.270 at that time. Vasek, OK1FD told me that he could copy him even stronger and stronger. And then after a while I almost fell down off my chair, 20Hz below the massive birdie I was able to copy weak tropo CQ CQ de EA2TO/1 :-))) Signal was fine with slight QSB and before end of his relation I got him much stronger. With shaking fingers I started calling him and immediately I received 529. We made it !!!

MP3: http://ok1teh.nagano.cz/mp3/ea2to_ok1teh_200108.mp3

Because the signal was getting stronger and stronger I sent a spam SMS to all of my friends that I could copy an EA stations via tropo in Prague. Then a sudden pile-up had started. Next stations in EA2TO/1 log were OK1YA, OK1COM, OK1VRV from JN79! and maybe some others. Because of very strong signal I worked him also as OK2KKW. How strong "Spaniards" can call CQ via tropo in Prague you can hear when you play this MP3 file:

http://www.ok2kkw.com/ea2to1_ok2kkw_2m_200108.mp3

Unfortunately EA2TO/1 didn't have an antenna ready for 70cm. Later he found some array, however his 2m signal dropped to cca 419, so we didn't make a contact. I heard something very weak on 432.220 MHz however it wasn't strong enough for 2 way qso. So the first tropo OK-EA qso on 70cm is still waiting for someone else.

How was this unexpected tropo opening possible? It seems to be lucky coincidence because EA2TO/1 was at cca 1500m ASL and he was right in the middle of a tropo duct. You can see it very well at the thermal output graph from Bordeux and Zaragoza. As you can see, there was a duct exactly at the right height in EA1 during our qso. Unfortunately, other EA stations at lower altitudes had less chance to make a QSO. Nevertheless I made another contact with EA1FBF in IN73.

The source for tropo output graphs:

http://weather.uwyo.edu/upperair/sounding.html

Due to lower altitude the EA1FBF's signal was very weak at the distance of 1600km so we had to make the contact using JT65 (he wasn't QRV on CW). I think that he might have gotten into the duct by the reflection from some near higher hills.

Eventually we made this tropo contact:

20.01.08 12:29 144345 EA1FBF O-23JT65 O-18 IN73WJ 1600 2x16el + 350W

On the picture you can see the tropo signal of EA1FBF in SpecJT. Those 2 horizontal lines are 2 pings from Meteor-Scater. Unfortunately he wasn't QRV on 70cm, either.

At the same time EA1FBF worked also stations from Dresden area and his digital signal was seen at even longer distance by DH2UAK in JO71. In the meantime Vasek, OK1FD worked EA1FBF with 53 report in SSB, congrats!

Then after about 2 hours the opening closed and tropo between OK and EA ended. At 18 hour EA2TO/1 made QRT, too. With EA QSO's I was also lucky, because the horizon is open to the right direction in my home QTH (directions to HB and ON/PA are unfortunately closed):

And what should I tell you as the last word? My dream and dream of several generations of OK VHF hams came finally true. It was UFB of course and I hope that this tropo QSO from home QTH to EA wasn't the last one. I also hope we'll have a luck to experience it on the higher bands in next years, too. :-))

73! Matej, OK1TEH
